Tomas Manto: “The Garden Show”
Painting is different from other methods of making art because to paint is to solve a problem of light on canvas. I begin a work by causing myself problems and the rest of my time is spent solving those problems, hopefully coming to some fresh conclusions by the end.
Painting is similar to cleaning a house–you have to throw everything on the floor and make it look much worse before it can look like where someone would want to live. This body of work is primarily oil paint. I completed all of it in my sophomore year at the Rhode Island School of Design.
