Revision to Article II
We are a living tradition…
The UUA bylaws require a periodic review of Article II every fifteen years. Article II contains the wording that is central to our belief system as UUs. It encompasses the Principles and the Sources, as well as our organization’s purpose.
During the General Assembly (GA) of the Unitarian Universalist Association held from June 21-25, 2023, the delegates preliminarily approved the proposed revision of Article II of the UUA Bylaws put forth by the Article II Study Commission. Article II outlines the (Seven) Principles and Purposes as well as the (Six) Sources of the Association. In addition, 5 amendments to the proposal were also approved.
The Article II Study Commission has been tasked with revising the proposal to incorporate these 5 amendments within six months. The revised version of Article II, including the amendments, will then be presented at the UUA General Assembly in 2024. During this Assembly, both the UUA Board and groups consisting of at least 15 UU congregations will have the opportunity to submit additional amendments to the proposed revision. Approval from at least three-fourths of the voting delegates is required for any such amendments. Subsequently, the proposed revision, along with the amendments, will be presented to the delegates for a vote, which necessitates at least a two-thirds majority vote. If this vote does not secure final approval, no similar proposal to amend Article II can be submitted to GA for a period of two years.
