Food Ministry

As Unitarian Universalists, we see access to food as a basic human right. At UUCville, we have a long history of working to help alleviate hunger and food insecurity in our local community and in our congregation. Although our food ministry is wide-ranging, we offer two core programs.

The Food Pantry

On the first Friday of every month, between 9 AM and 10 AM in the Summit House parking lot, UUCville offers a food pantry featuring USDA food purchased from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The Food Pantry is staffed by church volunteers and provides both perishable and non-perishable food. The Food Pantry typically welcomes 40-50 guests every month. There are no forms to fill out, and food is available on a first-come basis. For more information click here.

The Soup Kitchen

Every Sunday at 11 AM, volunteers from UUCville prepare and serve lunch to 45-60 people per week through the participation of six rotating host teams at The Haven in downtown Charlottesville. Either a hot meal or a bagged lunch is provided. If you’d like to volunteer or support the effort, please contact Bonnie Hansen or Elizabeth Breeden at  soupkitchen@uucharlottesville.org

The Hospital Meal Packet Program

A home-grown social action project that has been providing food to people in need since 2010. UUCCville provides meal packets through the Social Work office at the University of Virginia Medical Center. In 2025, we provided 900 meal packets that were distributed to people who had loved ones in the hospital. For more information click here.
