There is something about the holiday season that leads my spirit to yearn for quiet and reflection. Maybe it’s the hectic pace, the hustle and bustle of crowded stores, or the commercialization of a time that is supposed to be about peace and good will. Whatever the reason, during the holidays I invariably find myself drawn to poetry, to scripture, or to other meditative words that help me slow down, breathe, and reflect on what matters most in my life rather than always getting caught up in the rush for more.
Here are some words from Howard Thurman that always remind me of the true meaning of the holiday season and that speak to what stirs in my heart this time of year.
They come from a meditation called “The Season of Affirmation”
I affirm my faith in the little graces of life
I affirm my confidence in the dignity of all humankind
I affirm my joy in the experience of living
I affirm my need for others
I affirm my hunger for fulfillment, understanding, and peace
Friends, as you experience the rush and busyness of the holidays, I hope you find time to remember and affirm what matters most in your lives. May the season give you space for quiet, for rest, and for the joy of family, of friendship, and of love. Rev. Tim
