“Deep Deep Feeling”: Paul McCartney’s Twilight
Scott DeVeaux & Frank Dukes
What can we make of McCartney more than fifty years after the dissolution of the Beatles? “Deep Deep Feeling,” recorded during the pandemic, is a rich, expressive document that draws on his mastery of counterpoint. The lyrics point toward an emotional experience so intense he seems barely able to describe it. It’s hard to read his exploration of trauma autobiographically—McCartney rarely talks about his past, despite his own personal losses—but here he has crafted a brilliant piece that may give us new thoughts about this artist and his legacy.
