Historian Phyllis Leffler’s recent interview on the Coy Barefoot show got me thinking. Leffler talked about the significance of the public monuments controversies happening all over the country, north and south. Barefoot wondered about re-visioning installations that invite people to re-encounter history in public spaces, rather than removing controversy or painful subjects to museums. I signed the petition to remove General Lee’s statue from Lee Park, and would still be completely happy with that solution, but their discussion also inspired an alternative fantasy.
