The Pastoral Care Team (Cindy, Ellen, Joan, Patty, Meg, Rosalie, and Shirley) at UUCville does truly remarkable work. Through compassionate listening and presence, they help ensure that no one in our community faces life’s challenges alone.
A team member reflected on what drew them to this ministry: “I knew from my own life how essential it is to be heard and seen, to feel understood and cared for, and I wanted to offer that to my companions in this congregation.” None of us can live this life alone. We need support during hard times, meaningful connections with others, and the reassurance that someone cares.
This care is happening right here, right now, in our community. After Sunday service, the Pastoral Care Corner welcomes people who stop by with a sudden awareness that they need to talk. Even 15 minutes of conversation can lift a burden. Team members often see worry lines soften and shoulders relax when someone feels truly heard and accepted in their wholeness.
What’s particularly moving is the flexibility of this ministry. Some people need only a single visit, while others benefit from ongoing connection. Conversations may happen in person, on Zoom, by phone, or through email.
Team members also visit congregants in memory care units. One shared about visiting people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Music often unlocks memories, opening space to talk about loved ones they miss. Sometimes it’s the same conversation each visit—and that’s okay, because it’s what’s most on their heart.
Often, when people share and truly feel heard, something beautiful happens—they experience a deeper connection to community and express a desire to help others. Part of feeling whole includes knowing we have something of value to share, and the energy to do it. The pastoral care team has seen this ripple effect—the desire to give back after receiving.
As one team member put it, “Being on the pastoral care team gives me a chance to be present for someone in our community. It gives me a way to give back to the community that gives so much to me.” Team members have provided an ear to a middle schooler going through a transition and to adults in need too. As one member says, “we are not therapists or even ‘pastors’ but rather simply a compassionate listener to journey alongside you through a difficult time.”
This is why pledging matters. The Pastoral Care Team is one example of the ministries sustained by the generosity of this congregation. When members and friends pledge to UUCville, they help ensure that when someone needs a listening ear, a caring presence will be there.
