February Social Action Collection: Food Pantry

On the first Friday morning of every month, a group of about 15 volunteers receive food from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and unload the truck in the Summit House parking lot.  We put the food on tables, noting what is USDA and what is “bought food” from the food bank.  We purchase it from the Food Bank for 11cents a pound. We also buy cleaning products and personal care items by shopping the town for good deals.

Each month we spent an average of $188 at the Food Bank.  We served an average of  1,275 pounds of food for 89 individuals in 23 households.  Most of our clients are between the ages of 18-59 (40 people) and 18 people over the age of 60 and 31 children.

Your generosity has allowed us to serve those in our community who are experiencing food scarcity with warmth and personal connections that extend our hospitality and outreach to the wider community.  Thank you.
