June Art Show: Barbara Shenefield

About the artist

Barbara is a graphic designer and illustrator. Her recent projects are posters with social messaging, particularly about a future that acknowledges changing climate and takes productive steps to ameliorate it’s causes and its effects. Barbara’s work has recently been exhibited at McGuffey Art Center, at PVCC, and can be found in galleries in the area and at shenefielddesign.com

“My artwork has changed from more atmospheric to a genre that is like the commercial poster art of not so long ago. The New Deal brought us both artworks that were supported by our government, by the people of the US, as well as messaging that served the people of the USA: protect our natural resources, visit National Parks, public health is a concern for us all, being a citizen means participating. My recent posters pick up the style of that era and some of the messaging, too, which remains just as relevant today. ”

Artist’s thoughts on the work

I think a lot about the world we are leaving to the next generation.

I think a lot about how many struggle in a country that has chosen policies with effects, some anticipated some unforeseen, that make life uncertain, and mean.

I read a lot of history in order to fathom how our world is the way it is.

I read political thinkers with ideas on how we can make the future better.

I have a lot of hope for the future.
