MLK Community event Sunday, January 24, 4:00PM

KING CONFIDANT ANDREW J. YOUNG TO SPEAK IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

Comments by the Honorable Andrew J. Young, former Ambassador to the United Nations, will be featured at the 36th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Event,  a virtual celebration, on Sunday, January 24 at 4 pm on You Tube, “MLK Cville.”   The 2021 Martin Luther King Award to a citizen who exemplifies Dr. King’s teachings will be announced. As in past years, great music selected by Jonathan Spivey will be featured.

Z E (Zoe) Moreland, a student at Charlottesville High School (CHS), will read her essay that won the annual MLK Essay Contest.  Runners-up include Noah Boswinkel-Magrum of CHS; Emily Chang, Albemarle High School; Annika Clark,  CHS; and Abby Kim, Albemarle High School.  Moreland will receive $500, and each of semi-finalists, $100, generously donated by the Albemarle County Rotary Club.

 

In this time of virtual education, Computers4Kids was chosen as the event’s beneficiary for its work to provide computers and computer education to community youth.  Contributions may be made through CASH APP:  $MLKCville or  Venmo:  @MLK-Cville.  Checks may be mailed to MLK 2021 to Mount Zion African Baptist Church, 104 Lankford Ave, Charlottesville VA 22902.
