Who doesn’t love a tree? In my youth, sitting on a rock along a stream at Girl Scout Camp, I felt the long branches of an old oak tree reach down and envelop me — and the pains from child abuse disappeared. It freed my spirit and made Nature a permanent part of my being. As an adult I became aware of why my art focuses on trees.
At age 19 I discovered the First Unitarian Society of Madison, WI and their love of Nature, developing one’s own theology — respect for the individual — so lacking in my childhood.
“Tantalizing Trees” was a project for an exhibit at the Mennonite Retirement Home, Harrisonburg.
Task: do 30, 6″x6″ blocks of wood in 30 days.
Technique: Melted crayons using an iron on a block of wood. Create a tree using fabric paint.
Outline with metallic paint. Use imagination to create trees made with a unique twist, such as, “Surfing Tree”, “Credit Card Tree”, “Alphabet Tree”, etc. That is, trees made with cut up pieces of credit cards, alphabet letters or a tree surfing on waves.
